Our History

Vistoso Community Church is quite literally an answer to prayer. In the late 1980s two women—Lois Hilmer and Betty Butler—saw the need for a Bible-believing church in the Rancho Vistoso area. After meeting in the Precepts
Bible class, the two ladies agreed to meet weekly in the Sun City Vistoso clock tower to pray specifically for a new church in the area. It took some time for their prayers to be answered. But in April of 1992, a few pioneers agreed to start worship services as a mission of Catalina Baptist Church. From August to December of that year, the group met on Thursday nights in a storefront room in Mountain View Plaza in Sun City Vistoso. The first Sunday service was held December 6, 1992, at 8:00 a.m., so that the Pastor could return to his home Catalina church for their services. In January of 1993, Dr. Leonard Griffiths came as pastor to the new church.
There were 19 members. Ministry grew quickly in the new church. Al and Ruby Brogan were the first to be baptized in the new church. The Women on Mission group was organized and the first Christmas Mission offering was taken with a wonderful outpouring of support that more than doubled the mission goal. In June of 1994, The Arizona Baptist New Church Ventures purchased a four-acre lot for the new church on Rancho Vistoso Blvd, right next to the Fire Station. Then the congregation purchased the lot from them. As the congregation grew, their need for facilities grew. First they moved to the Sun City Vistoso Social Hall, and began planning for a building project with ground breaking on October 25, 1998.

January 28, 1996, the church was fully constituted and was no longer a mission. Sixty-nine members signed the charter. The first service in their new building was held August 8, 1999, with paint still fresh, no landscaping, and numerous details still incomplete. The building project was designed in two phases: the 6000-square-foot worship building and a fellowship and education building to be built in the future. In 2007, the Vistoso Community Church congregation with the church mortgage fully paid voted to move forward with the construction of Phase II scheduled for dedication in early 2010. The current church focus is outreach to our ever-growing community, located just north of Tucson. As the demographics of the area change, we are also expanding our ministry and diversifying our selection of Bible Studies, outreach efforts, and fellowship activities.
