Special Events

What’s Happening in 2012: February

Singles Valentine Banquet. On Tuesday, February 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m., VCC will hold a special Valentine’s Banquet for all of our single members and friends. Our single members and friends are also encouraged to invite a special friend as a guest for the banquet. To make your reservations for the Singles Valentine’s Banquet, sign up on the reservation sheet in the church foyer beginning Sunday, February 5. Note that if you would enjoy having transportation that evening, indicate that on the reservation sheet.
Mission Luncheon. The Missions Committee is hosting a Ladies Luncheon on Thursday, 2/23, at 11:00 a.m. right after our HeartCall Ladies Bible Study. The highlight will be guest speaker Julie Evans.

Julie has served as a campus missionary on the University of Arizona campus since 1997 and is now in her third year as Director of Christian Challenge there. Julie loves college students and reaches out to U of A and Pima Community College students with the good news of the gospel. This collegiate ministry engages students with the message of Christ so they can learn to live His challenge on campus and in the world.
All ladies of the church are welcome to invite friends and requested to bring a dish to share for lunch.

Julie works with Missions Service Corps, the statewide Baptist organization where VCC members, Clint and Carol Smith, serve as Directors.
February Bible Study. For the four Sundays in February, C.J. Hindman will continue the Bible Study he initiated last fall, a study on “The Seven Deadly Sins.”

After a brief review of last spring’s information, CJ will continue with the four sins that were not covered last year. They are greed, sloth, gluttony, and lust.

What’s Happening in 2012: January

Big Events in January. VCC is blessed that we received four into the membership of the church, baptized two members, and held a child dedication service on one Sunday in January.

First to be baptized was Bob Gislason, who said that he had attended church all his life and received the touch of the Holy Spirit at the age of 43. Now, 43 years later, he has chosen to be baptized at the age of 86. Pastor Dale Adams also baptized Bob’s daughter Jodi, who also joined the Church.

At VCC baptism is the outward sign of the inner reality of the believer’s faith in Jesus Christ. As a result children are dedicated to Jesus Christ, not baptized until they can make their own profession of faith. Jodi’s son Alexander was dedicated to Jesus Christ and then introduced to the entire congregation.

Following the service on Sunday morning, there will be a festive time of fellowship.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. The Vistoso Community Church missionary focus for the month of December is the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering that provides vital support for our foreign missionaries. The first week of the month is a week of prayer. Each day for eight days, our prayers focus on an international city where our missionaries are working diligently to spread the gospel.

There is also a rich reward of blessing for our ministry team members and our prayer partners.

The evening begins with a great chili supper (including a great dessert) and then features plenty of time for great fellowship while playing games. By special request there will be multiple tables of Scrabble plus Mexican train and other great games.

We also have a summer event planned for the fourth Friday in August. On August 26, the food will be subs and make-your-own sundaes followed by an old fashioned sing-along. Don’t worry about not knowing the words to the songs, song books will be provided.
To wrap up the summer, we will have a bonus event the fourth Sunday in September—dinner plus music entertainment. More details as the day approaches.

New Minister of Music

On Sunday, January 9, Vistoso Community Church called a new Minister of Music. Paul Matthews has an extensive background in Christian music and will be a wonderful asset to the church’s ministry.

Initially trained at age 13 by his mother (a Conductor herself), he directed his first music publicly for a Thanksgiving service at his father’s church. (He notes that he enjoyed being a PK [preacher’s kid]).

In college, he was student Conductor for the choir. For more than 45 years he has served in local churches as a Minister of Music.
His ministry of music has included association with Lillenas Music Publishing, Ralph Carmichael, and the late John W. Peterson conducting national and international seminars, conferences, and concerts. He also studied choral conducting with Joseph Balback, Nobel Cain, and Robert Shaw.

In 1994 Family Life Radio brought Paul to Tucson to manage their seminars and his late wife, Marianne, founded Women of Virtue. He retired from active ministry while his wife was ill, and returns to it with his new position at Vistoso Community Church.

Missionary Speaker

The VCC Mission Committee invites all women to a a special Women’s Missionary Coffee on Thursday, January 20, beginning at 10:00.

Older children can attend the Bible Study in the sanctuary with their parents. The small room off the rear of the Sanctuary is now prepared for our young learners with new bookcases, a work table and stools, and lots and lots of books and other classroom supplies.
God has blessed us with this new aspect of church growth. Let’s support this new
ministry with our praise and prayers!
VCC Library Reopens
After months of construction and decorating, our VCC library is again open to the congregation. Our librarian, Art Riggins, has implemented a new system, categorizing all resources by subjects and numbers, and creating a spreadsheet listing available items for check-out. The lending library, in the sanctuary building, has a nice collection of books and CDS for congregation members to borrow.
Our Reference Library in our new conference room has a large collection of Bibles and Scriptural reference materials that everyone is welcome to use on site. This is a great resource for person study and for teachers preparing Bible classes.

Two Fourth of July Commemorations

On Sunday, July 4, Vistoso Community Church honors country and the sacrifices that have ensured and sustained our freedom of religion with a special extended service beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Then at 2:00 p.m., we host the presentation of the Sun City Vistoso Fourth of July Celebration featuring the Sun City Singers.  When the concert was on the verge of being cancelled because of renovations in the Sun City auditorium, the church stepped in and offered its newly expanded sanctuary for the annual celebration.

Certificate of Occupancy Granted

After years of planning and more than a year in the building, our building and renovation projects are officially completed.  On June 23, Vistoso Community Church received the official and signed Occupancy Permit from Oro Valley.  This is the last step in a project that is an ongoing delight to all members and friends.  Every week there is something new to see and enjoy as the final decorating touches are added, including the new ramada for shade and comfortable furniture on the patio, the new green chairs for the choir and reupholstered chairs on either side of the communion table.

What’s Happening in 2010: May

May 9 is the Day of our First Service In our newly expanded sanctuary, the masking tape is coming off the cross because the painting is completed, the clutter is cleared, and we are moving the chairs back into the sanctuary for our first service in our newly-expanded sanctuary on Sunday, May 9. What a joyous day! Although there are still some furnishing issues to resolve. All the construction on both our beautiful new fellowship building and our remodeled sanctuary was completed almost on the anniversary of our ground breaking, which occurred on the first Sunday in May of 2009. The last Sunday in October we will have the official building dedication and celebration.

We welcome Don, a regular Bible study instructor over the years, back for this four-week series in May.

What’s Happening in 2010: April

The congregation of Vistoso Community Church, by vote, has declared: Our mission is to be used by God to help the lost receive eternal life, and those with eternal life to grow in grace and knowledge. Our Associate Pastor Kevin Redig is planning a Bible Study for the remainder of the month of April that helps us touch base again with the first half of our mission statement by exploring some topics personal evangelism topics. For our Sunday morning bible studies through April, Kevin will lead a study entitled Evangelism the VCC Way. The study will cover a range of topics including the motivation to share our faith, some practical methods of sharing our faith, and how to deal with objections. All of these topics will be related to our specific church fellowship as we gather tools to carry out our mission. During our Wednesday evening Bible Studies, Kevin will continue his verse by verse study of the book of Galatians which is a true blessing to all attending the studies.

On Thursday, April 29, our HeartCall Ladies Bible Study has planned a special outing for all the ladies of the church—a trip to one of Tucson’s newest attractions The Mini-time Machine. This beautiful new museum houses a delightful collection of miniatures of all kinds including 275 miniature houses and room boxes and other collectibles.

During the sanctuary remodeling, all church activities have moved to the new building and members and friends are asked to avoid entering the construction zone. The church offices are now located at the entrance right off the parking lot (circled in red), so this is the best entrance to use during the week.

While we hold services in our new building, our construction crew will take out the walls between the sanctuary, the offices, and the foyer to increase our worship seating capacity and reconfigure our sound and projection room. Pray for this construction project as well.
